Master in “Safe and Reliable Nuclear Applications” (SARENA)

IMT Atlantic

Description

The Master of Science in Nuclear Engineering, SARENA (SAfe and REliable Nuclear Applications), is a two-year program designed to develop scientific, technical and managerial skills to enable engineers to work in all fields related to nuclear energy and applications, while fostering a strong international culture open to students from all over the world. The program, taught entirely in English, covers a wide range of nuclear applications, including the design and operation of nuclear power plants (NPPs), as well as the safe management of radioactive waste and the decommissioning of facilities as prerequisites for sustainability.

The SARENA program is a comprehensive two-year Master’s degree, divided into four semesters, totaling 120 ECTS. It begins with a three-semester academic phase (90 ECTS), followed by an industry- or research-oriented semester (30 ECTS), during which students complete an internship and write their Master’s thesis.

The Master offers two distinct courses:

  • Radioactive Waste Management and Dismantling (RWMD)
  • Nuclear Reactor Operations and Safety (NROS)

Both courses of study are progressively structured, with each semester building on the knowledge acquired in the previous semester:

  1. First semester: Common core for both programs, providing a foundation in nuclear science and engineering, as well as management modules. Taught at IMT Atlantique in France.
  2. Second semester: First stage of specialization. RWMD students take courses in radiochemistry, environmental impact and safety at UPM in Spain, while NROS students study nuclear reactors, thermohydraulics and modeling at LUT in Finland.
  3. Third semester: Completion of specialization. Students in the RWMD track study radioactive waste management and decommissioning at IMT Atlantique in France, while those in the NROS track focus on nuclear reactor operation and safety at UL in Slovenia.
  4. Fourth semester: Carried out at the placement site, either in a company or in a research institute. Students are supervised by an academic tutor from their institution and a company or laboratory tutor.

At the end of the program, students on the RWMD pathway earn a double degree from IMT Atlantique and UPM, while those on the NROS pathway earn a double degree from LUT and UL.

Whatever the course, the location of the internship or the subject of the thesis, the focus of the SARENA program remains SAFETY and reliability in nuclear applications. The consortium was formed to provide expert education and train highly qualified engineers for the nuclear sector, with teachers who have direct experience in the nuclear industry. All teachers strive to help students understand the industry, its realities, needs and opportunities, to help them develop their career path to the full.
