The Direction Générale de l’Énergie et du Climat (DGEC) is a strategic entity under the authority of the Ministère de l’Économie et des Finances, with oversight partially shared with the Ministère de la Transition écologique et de la Cohésion des territoires. The department is organized into several divisions, including the Direction de l’énergie, the Service du climat et de l’efficacité énergétique, and a sous-direction devoted to general affairs and synthesis. There is also a specific mission dedicated to hydrogen, integrated into the general management.
The DGEC plays a central, multifunctional role. It is responsible for drawing up and implementing France’s energy policy, with a focus on combating global warming and reducing atmospheric pollution. In addition, the DGEC oversees the control and distribution of energy products and raw materials, and coordinates the national program for prevention and adaptation to climate change.
In the field of energy, particularly nuclear energy, the DGEC ensures the security and competitiveness of France’s energy supply. It ensures the smooth operation of energy markets such as electricity, gas and oil. In terms of nuclear policy, it integrates climate issues into its strategy. The DGEC works in close collaboration with a wide range of players, including government departments, local authorities, the research community, private companies, and European and international partners, to carry out its missions and meet current and future energy and climate challenges.
