About us

The Commissariat à l’Énergie Atomique (CEA) plays a crucial role in France’s strategic decision-making capacity in the nuclear sector, and represents the country in international organizations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The CEA conducts research aimed at improving the competitiveness, safety and longevity of France’s nuclear fleet, supporting leading industrial partners such as EDF and Framatome.

CEA is also at the forefront of research into tomorrow’s nuclear technologies, notably with the development of small modular reactors (SMRs) and fourth-generation reactors. In terms of training, the Institut national des sciences et techniques nucléaires (INSTN), a branch of the CEA, offers high-level teaching and technical training, mobilizing over 1,450 experts and using advanced teaching platforms and sophisticated digital tools.

CEA also manages and develops major experimental facilities and simulation tools to support its research activities. These facilities are used to conduct full-scale experiments in various nuclear reactors, both in France and abroad, enabling neutron calculation tools to be validated and precise scientific measurements to be made.

The close collaboration between CEA and the International Institute of Nuclear Energy (I2EN), which was hosted by CEA during its early years, strengthens the training offer for French and foreign students in the nuclear field. The I2EN facilitates international students’ access to French training courses, thus contributing to the dissemination of best safety practices and the knowledge fundamental to the responsible development of the nuclear industry. By working with a vast network of international partners, including universities, grandes écoles, industry and agencies, this collaboration enables the CEA to promote the exchange of knowledge and expertise, training a new generation of experts essential to its future research and development projects.
