From Steam to Electricity: Key Systems and Components of the Conventional Island in Nuclear Power Plants
Date: February 23-27, 2026
Location: Hotel IBIS Plzen, Czech Republic
Context
The Czech Republic, Slovakia and France have a long tradition of winter schools.
The 2026 edition of the school will be organized by the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, in partnership with I2EN, STUBA and industry.
It aims to train future engineers on the conventional island and foster collaboration between French, Czech, and Slovak operators, local industry, and turbine, generator, and engineering companies to strengthen the multinational nuclear supply chain.
Objectives
- Give participants a comprehensive understanding of the main systems and components, design principles and operational challenges of the conventional island of a nuclear power plant.
- Highlight the specific operational and safety challenges, as well as the unique interfaces with the network and the environment (cooling source), unique to nuclear environments.
- Improve understanding of the critical interfaces between the conventional island and the reactor building.
- Illustrate the specific safety, regulatory and performance requirements for nuclear power plants, focusing on the interfaces between reactor technology, conventional systems and the environment.
- Foster the teamwork and transnational skills needed to manage a complex, international supply chain in the context of new construction.
Format
- Lectures by university professors and industry professionals,
- Case studies from operating nuclear power plants and component suppliers,
- Visits to nuclear sites.
Target audience
Master’s and PhD students in nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, process and chemical engineering, materials engineering, energy systems, electrical engineering, controls and instrumentation engineering, and other technical fields related to the design, operation and maintenance of the conventional (secondary) island of nuclear power plants.
