A Malaysian ministerial delegation visited France on May 13, with the aim of exploring potential partnerships as part of Malaysia's national decarbonization strategy, including nuclear collaboration with France.
In a major step towards nuclear collaboration, a high-ranking Malaysian delegation visited France on May 13 in connection with Malaysia’s national decarbonization strategy. Hosted by I2EN, the delegation was led by His Excellency Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah Bin Haji Yusof, Minister of Energy to the Deputy Prime Minister, and accompanied by the Malaysian Ambassador to France, His Excellency Datuk Eldeen Husaini Mohd Hashim, as well as senior officials from various ministries and agencies such as the Ministry of Energy Transition, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, the Malaysian regulator and Petroliam Nasional Berhad.
The visit highlighted Malaysia’s strategic interest in integrating nuclear power into its energy mix, with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions and guaranteeing a stable energy supply. With its nuclear expertise, France has positioned itself as a potential partner, offering its know-how in the development, construction and operation of nuclear facilities, as well as creating institutional partnerships to facilitate academic exchanges between the two countries.
During their stay, the delegation visited the Belleville nuclear power plant and met the French Minister of Industry and Energy, Marc Ferracci. Discussions focused on cooperation projects, the exchange of technological know-how and safety procedures, essential to a sustainable nuclear program.
Representatives from French institutions and companies in the nuclear sector, such as ASNR, Andra, CEA, EDF and Assystem, showcased their skills and shared their international developments in nuclear services. One point of discussion was the development of a skilled workforce, a challenge that I2EN is ready to meet by collaborating with Malaysia’s Energy Commission and the country’s academic institutions.
In positioning itself as an emerging player in the nuclear sector, Malaysia is focusing on education and training, crucial to its development. I2EN has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting these ambitions by facilitating the development of a skilled workforce, ready to tackle the complexities of nuclear energy.
This visit marks a promising step forward in Franco-Malaysian relations, paving the way for a collaboration that supports a sustainable, low-carbon energy future, while recognizing the essential role of nuclear power in achieving global climate goals. Both parties demonstrated strong commitment and shared a common vision, feedback on previous projects, and a strong readiness to accompany Malaysia on this ambitious nuclear trajectory.
