Giovanni Battista (Gianni) Bruna, Dr. Applied Nuclear Physics from the Genova University, Italy is currently an international expert in reactor physics, safety and operation.
Gianni started his professional carrier as an engineer in the ‘70s in the international team in charge of the design and construction of the European Fast Breeder Reactor Superphenix.
He spent most of his more than 45-year lasting professional life working in different fields of endeavour (including reactor physics, control, operation and safety, R&D, computation chain development and validation, experiments on mock-ups) in Ansaldo, Framatome, AREVA and eventually IRSN (Institute for Radioprotection and Nuclear Safety, the French TSO – Technical Safety Organisation).
Appointed senior AREVA-group international expert, in the mid ‘90s, he has been deeply involved in GEN-IV concept design and studies, also serving as the coordinator for the wide-range European R&D HTGR project RAPHAEL.
He joined the French IRSN in September 2005, to serve as Deputy Director of the Reactor Safety Division, in charge of the Safety-oriented R&D as well as the European and international affairs. In 2012, he has been appointed Scientific Director of IRSN to promote Institute scientific excellence through R&D, education, training and tutoring, coordinate its participation in radio-ecology and safety European Platforms and in the TSO Network ETSON.
Deeply involved in the launching of the NUGENIA Association – which has been gathering more than 120 European actors of the nuclear field – to promote fission R&D activities within Europe, he has been serving as its Technical Coordinator from 2012 to 2014. As such, he participated in the writing of the NUGENIA Roadmap document, issued October 2014, and coordinated the NUGENIA Vision Document, published April 2015.

Author of more than 150 scientific publications in different fields, he has been a long lasting member of the Scientific Council of the DEN – Direction of Nuclear Energy – of CEA – Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique -, he is member of the Advisory Board of the NINE Engineering (Italy) and of the Board of Directors of the SCM (France). He has been serving for many years – and still is – as an evaluator for the HCERES – the French National High Committee for Evaluation of Research and Teaching -.
Gianni has been included in the 2000 Millenary Edition of the Barons Who’s Who and in the 30th Pearl Anniversary Edition of the Marquis Who’s Who in the World (2013 Ed.) as well, and currently is.
